Serene Dental Therapy was built around a simple intention: to be the practice that anxious patients have been quietly looking for. The kind of place where you can ask a question twice, where pain relief is the first conversation, and where being nervous doesn't make you a difficult patient.
The practice is led by a registered dental therapist working within the South African Dental Therapy scope — focused on the fundamentals of good oral health: clean teeth, healthy gums, lasting fillings, and gentle extractions when needed. For anything outside that scope, you'll always get an honest referral.
We focus on what dental therapy does best — the everyday work that keeps your mouth healthy for the long run. Each visit is unrushed, explained, and tailored to how anxious or comfortable you feel that day.

Professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar — even in the places your toothbrush cannot reach. A simple part of regular preventive care.
Tooth-coloured composite fillings (and amalgam when requested) to restore decayed or damaged teeth. We use generous numbing and stop the moment you ask.
When a tooth cannot be saved, we remove it as kindly as the procedure allows. Pain relief options are explained before we begin, and you'll leave with clear aftercare guidance.
The least dramatic appointment, and often the most valuable. We talk through brushing, flossing, diet and habits — small adjustments that stop bigger problems later.

Anxious patients have heard "we'll be gentle" a hundred times. Here's what it means in this room.
If you want to pause, we pause. If you want to know exactly what's happening, we narrate. If you'd rather not hear the details, we keep the room quiet.
We discuss pain relief before we discuss the procedure. Topical first, then local anaesthetic where appropriate — no surprises mid-treatment.
A dental therapist's scope is defined — and we work within it. For root canals, orthodontics or complex surgery, we'll refer you to a trusted dentist and explain why.
If your question isn't here, send it through on WhatsApp — we're happy to answer before you book.
A dental therapist is a healthcare professional registered with the HPCSA, trained to perform a defined scope of dental work — examinations, cleanings, fillings, basic extractions and oral hygiene education. For specialised treatment outside that scope (root canals, orthodontics, complex surgery), we refer you to a trusted dentist or specialist.
Yes. We accept all major South African medical aids, including Discovery Health, Bonitas, Momentum, Medihelp, GEMS, Polmed, Bestmed and Profmed. Where possible we claim directly in-clinic so you don't have to chase reimbursements yourself.
It's the most common reason people come to us. We schedule longer first appointments so there's no rush, talk you through every step before we touch anything, and offer numbing options as the first part of the conversation — not the last. If you need to pause, you pause. There's no judgement here.
Walk-ins are welcome, though we recommend a WhatsApp message first — that way we can give you an indication of waiting time and prepare the room for you. For dental pain or trauma, send us a message and we'll do our best to see you the same day.
The practice is in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. We open from around 8am on weekdays — please WhatsApp us on 075 976 7929 for the day's exact hours and directions, as we're a small team and our schedule occasionally shifts to accommodate emergency appointments.
We welcome children for gentle check-ups, cleanings and preventive care. Our calm pace tends to suit younger and first-time visitors, and parents are always welcome in the room. For anything beyond our scope, we'll happily refer you.
Send through your details and we'll be in touch within a few hours — usually on WhatsApp — to confirm a time that suits you and answer any questions before you arrive.
